I have been making content on YouTube and Twitch for several months now and I’m at a crossroads. I am not sure how to proceed, especially on my YouTube channel, regarding whether or not to make timelapse videos or continue more traditional let’s play style videos. Here’s the argument for each.

I have been making traditional let’s play videos because I think my teaching personality can shine through. I am able to explain my strategy and decision making. Since I mostly play simulation games, this seems to make sense to me. On the other hand, the argument against these let’s play videos is that the “watch time” metric is awful. People who do click do not often stay to watch the story unfold. Is this poor storytelling on my part? Improper structure of the video? Or just impulsive and impatient viewers?

On the other hand, the timelapse style is quick hitting and a lot happens in a short amount of time. People can enjoy watching a city develop or a tractor finish a field in no time. There’s more story packed into a smaller package, allowing people to follow more of my gameplay story in less of their own real time. But the negative is that the timelapse style removes my commentary and insight. Sure I can include some closed captions to narrate my decisions, but it loses a bit of that live feeling.

So what do you prefer? Do you think this is only a problem because of the style of games I play? Don’t worry I won’t be switching to Fortnite montages any time soon. I’m just thinking of ways that I can bring the kind of videos that people who enjoy my gameplay might want. Feel free to share your thoughts, opinions, and experiences in the comment section.
